Newsroom \ Chamber in the News \ Opposed to Government’s proposed Enquiry into JPS

At the same time, there is a call on the OUR to become more vigilant and proactive in protecting the interests of JPS customers, “Even while we urge the Government to fast-track initiatives exploring alternative energy sources in a bid to broaden the landscape, providing options to Jamaicans who continue to feel powerless under this monopolistic arrangement.”

In response to the recent public discourse regarding the high cost of electricity, the company’s billing practices and their effects of on businesses and householders, the Chamber had invited board members and senior managers of JPS to address the concerns. The company has responded that it would await the outcome of the OUR  and the results of an independent external audit into the meter replacement programme and the billing of customers before making any further public comments on the issues.

In the meantime, the JPS’ External Affairs Manager for the Western Region, Ms. Kathy Cooke, responded to customer service queries raised by chamber members at their meeting on Wednesday.

Crump said in his statement, “Notwithstanding, the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce & Industry notes that among the greatest source of distress for businesses and householders in Jamaica is the cost being charged by JPS for electricity supply.”
